Reflections of an Archway Thanksgiving

It all began with a drastic drop in temperature, the sky turned a funny color, sounds seemed muffled and the flakes began their journey to the earth. It is hard to describe the beauty and serenity as the snow begins to stick and the earth is transformed. Once the snow had laid down its white blanket we are offered one of two options; stress about how it will be an inconvenience in our regimented lives or embrace its beauty along with its unique challenges. We eventually decided to choose the latter.

We tried to pretend the snow would not affect our activities here at the barn and although we fought it as best we could by Tuesday morning the storm had won us over. The temperature had dropped to 17 degrees and we knew we had our chores cut out for us as we began our day. Julie and Ana decided not to test the icy roads, so the residents would have to get to work. There were pipes to protect, horses to ride, paths to clear, horses to groom, warm water to be carried, horses to turnout.....ok you get the picture. As Corey, Payton, Natalie, Jenna and Krista bundled up in their cold weather gear, out they bravely went to exercise as many horses as possible before the sun and temperatures began to drop. Our arena is partially open and although we enjoy a beautiful view, the air was icy  against their faces which added  one more element in the battle to stay warm. As I managed the office I heard a lot of giggling and chatting, this seems to be part of the camaraderie that comes from a group working together in tough conditions. They went through their share of hand and toe warmers because, as you riders out there know, your feet and fingers take a beating in the boots and gloves  worn while riding!

Once the riding was done,  extra blankets were added  and we fed a sloppy, warm, salty mash; we left the barn with a cozy feeling that our horses were comfortable and grateful for our efforts that day.

Wednesday was a repeat of Tuesday, we had more help and were able to get all the horses exercised. We really appreciate how everyone pitched in and got the job done. As the day came to an end we were ready for a day of celebration, food and giving thanks!

This year Corey and I decided to have  our loyal barn staff take Thanksgiving afternoon off to spend an evening relaxing and enjoying themselves. As the three o'clock feeding time arrived Corey, Payton and I, along with two Jack Russels and a Cavalier bundled up to head down to the barn, horses were very quiet and happy as we opened the barn door.  We fed them hay, our salty mash and added warm water to their buckets, as the doors closed we  told them we would be back at 6:00 and headed to the house to add the finishing touches to our Thanksgiving meal. After Dinner it was back down to the barn for the final feed, it was a wonderful way to finish our day of Thanks and express our gratitude to these wonderful creatures who are part of our lives.

I hope that your Thanksgiving was as filling in the heart and tummy as ours was here at Archway!!

West Coast Pony Finals

Sorry I am a little behind with this post but things in our neck of the woods have been pretty crazy since our return home. Lots of changes happening here and although transformation is good, the process can be uncomfortable. But let's go back to the fantastic experience we had in California attending the LA Preview. This year we had the opportunity to take two ponies from Archway and  were entrusted with two girls from Thumbs Up Farm and Red Gate Farm to form what we tagged the NW Pony Team!!

We begin our journey on Saturday when our extended pony group arrived here at the farm to spend the night for early departure. Ricardo and I had already packed all our equipment in the front of our 15 horse semi and as Buddy and Ellie arrived with their ensemble poor Ricardo had to pack and re pack to fit everything, including a refrigerator, into the truck.  So as the sun rose on Sunday morning and all the ponies were loaded into their box stalls with all the luxuries of home, I waved goodbye from the porch as the truck pulled out. We were LA bound!

As we  were making plans we decided to waive hiring a groom this show, we wanted to create a truly memorable experience by doing all the work ourselves. Yes, that includes all the stall cleaning, four daily feedings and in addition the grooming and coaching. Mind you, all of this is fine but add to that list having two clients fly down to try horses and you have created quite a menagerie. WHAT WERE WE THINKING!!

This is what a typical day for Corey and I went:

4:30- alarm, get dressed, check emails

5:30 - out the door heading towards the closest Starbucks (Grandes needed)

6:00- feed water and begin stall cleaning( I changed into my muck boots and barn chore coat)

6:30 - groom and hack or hand walk ponies

8:00- pony madness begins and goes on until dark!

now in between all this we had Leslie and Madeleine fly down to try 8 horses, CONTROLLED CHAOS ... on Saturday Corey and I did not sit down the entire day, CRAZY

6:00 pm- bathe ponies, feed, clean stalls and tack; wrap, blanket and lock up

7:00pm- dinner

8:30 check email and fall into bed exhausted and happy

And so it went.........Brandan was there on vacation and found himself pulled into the madness with us, it is an insanity that can only be experienced. We could not have done it without you, Brandan!

Let's talk about the performances. Payton with Serendipity and Gummi Bear, Samantha with Ella Enchanted  and Becca with Paint the Town clearly demonstrated what dedication and hard work can create. From beginning to end they exhibited an unwavering focus and excitement to the task at hand. They all felt a little overwhelmed heading into that first jumping round but they gained confidence with every fence they jumped. The ponies were true champions and gave their best each day. How we love the ponies!! This was an emotional show for  all three girls as they were coming to the end of a long time partnership and preparing to move on to new experiences. They pushed through all of these obstacles to create some of the best performances of their young careers. The NW pony team (including parents) cheered each other on and stood by to nourish(water) and support (groom/hugs)the team through the long hours. There were many ribbons won, championships awarded and an overwhelming feeling of pride and success as the show week came to a close.

As we all packed our trunks in preparation for our  flight home, we were content with the feeling of having done the very best that was available to us that week. I would like to express thanks to everyone who helped create one of the highlights of my coaching career, you girls and ponies ROCK!!

We left LA knowing we had entrusted our ponies in the capable hands of Ricardo  as he prepared the Archway Truck  for the long drive north. GOOD TIMES!!

We say Goodbye to our Feline Friend

Our beloved 17yr old barn kitty Bubbles had to be euthanized on Friday. Bubbles moved with us to Archway's current location in 1995 and has been a loyal cat to the barn. In her prime she was a superior mouse hunter but as she aged she became less active and spent more time roaming the barn aisle and hanging with Julie in the tackroom. We will miss you Bubbles and we feel blessed to have had you as a part of the Archway Family for so many years.

Fall is Here..

We had a beautiful first week of November here in the Northwest! After all the goblins were chased away from the weekend the Fall came into full bloom here at Archway. Our weather was cool in the early morning and warm and sunny during the day. The horses enjoyed a few final days of turnout without blankets and demonstrated their appreciation by coming in from the fields muddy and happy. It is almost time to close down some of the fields as we prepare for our winter of rain and mud. This is always a little sad because the horses love being out on the grass, but alas, they will move back to the paddocks until spring. Winter blankets have come out of storage and Corey, Krista, Julie and Ana are sailing through the body clips, we wash our horses with mayonaise, yes mayonaise after they are clipped to condition their coats. I love seeing the beautiful shine after the are dry.

As I worked in the office I was able to watch the leaves softly falling to the ground like snow creating a beautiful blanket of color on the ground, the sun shinning through the fall colors created the most unique lighting, I made an amateur attempt using my iphone to capture the week in photos so for your enjoyment....

Happy Halloween

What a frightful day at the barn! The goblins (aka Patty and Julie) were out in force and turned the barn into a Halloween Extravaganza! The Bats, Skeletons, Mummy,  and body parts appeared in various locations around the barn and arena to create a frightful experience. Mike the creepy butler was at the door to greet everyone with his axe in hand. Some of our riders wore their costumes and the horses were good sports about the whole thing. The Lobby was decked out with Halloween greetings of hot spiced cider and cupcakes to fend off the fall chill. The parents and children laughed, giggled and gasped as we enjoyed another Saturday at Archway!! Wishing you all a Happy and Safe Halloween and enjoy the slide show. [slideshow]

NW Autumn Classic

Last week we attended the NW Autumn Classic in Monroe. This show is  host to the Zone 9 Finals, the WCHR year end awards for the Northwest Region and the ASPCA Maclay Regional Finlas! Bill Moroney and Christine Tauber officiated over this weeks competition and what a week it was! This year in an effort to boost Jumper entries the Hunters moved outside, now usually in September we have our most dependable weather, we are usually enjoying a beautiful Indian Summer, but of course this year Mother Nature threw in a few twists  just for the thrill. We were not deterred by the humidity, rain or mud  for as they say "the show must go on".

Horses were wonderful and gave their best throughout the week. We lost a couple of shoes and finished some rounds splattered in mud but we had a wonderful time. The awards were spectacular and there were lots to be handed out each day. Thanks goes out to Dianne for the coolers, Melody for the awards, Nancy for the WCHR awards and Cara for the Maclay gift bags , we needed a utility trailer to haul it back home! They held wonderful parties almost every evening and the welcome center was enjoyed by all. Everyone worked hard to make this a wonderful experience and I for one believe they succeeded.

Thank you to all the moms who organized the wonderful party in honor of Hannah's participation in the ASPCA Maclay Regionals. Each year our riders work very hard to qualify and the wonderful show of support is what makes Archway special.

On Sunday we had a down pour that lasted for  30 minutes, then the flooding, then 30 minutes later all was well and the show continued with sunshine overhead. Crazy weather, you will see a few pictures in the slide show.

Kelsey and Hannah are heading to LA. Good Luck to Hannah  in the  USEF Pessoa Regionals and the USEF Talent Search!!

Jeff Cook Clinic

As Archway riders prepare for the upcoming Regionals we are fortunate to welcome Jeff Cook here for an Equitation Clinic. A few weeks ago Shelly Kerron from Legacy called to see if she could hold the 3'6" section here at Archway. I jumped at the chance to host Jeff again. His knowledge and teaching sklls are evident from the moment he introduces himself to the group. He keeps the group small (6 riders) and intimate, allowing lots of time to work with each student.

During Evergreen Classic, Ricardo  replaced and revamped the footing in the indoor ring, so we were ready to really put it to the test. The horses loved it and travelled around the ring without a sound. Jeff set a challenging course and commented on how he looks forward to using the dimensions of our ring which allows for many options while building a course.

As Jeff challenged these riders and their mounts they demonstrated throughout the morning why they are successfully competing at the top level. Negotiating line options, inside turns and end jumps skillfully; all participants built success on each ride. After 2 full hours of instruction the horses and riders took their horses out into the sunshine  to walk and reflect on the day. They will be returning for more tomorrow at 9:00am.[gallery link="file" columns="2"]

Seasons End

As Labor Day approaches most of our riders head back to school and start the fall lesson schedule, others head off to college and new adventures. This is always a hard time for us, these girls have spent many hours with us riding, working, showing and as the leaves begin to fade we know things must change. Marisa has left for her second year at Fresno, she helped out all summer with the rides at home. Thank you Marisa for all your hard work, we appreciate it!!

Kelsey is heading to Western very soon and even though we will meet her in LA we will feel her absence. She was at the barn every day ready to fill in where needed, we will be doing double takes as we look for  her on her computer doing her online classes in between rides. She was always available to be a "big sister" to the younger girls.  K you have developed into a wonderful horsewoman and we will miss you this fall!!

Thunderbird Show Park Fort Langley Summer Classic

Last week we traveled across the border to beautiful British Columbia, just outside of Vancouver to the incredible Thunderbird Show Park. Each year when we arrive, there are always new things added to the Park. The Tidball family works hard to produce a great venue. It is so much fun visiting our Canadian neighbors. Competing with different horses and riders is a refreshing change and a great test of skills. The Canadians love to jump at full height specs and the courses are always challenging. Once again our horses and riders represented us well, demonstrating their skills and adaptability . This August show brings many FEI horses and riders heading to Spruce Meadows allowing us to see some of the top riders in North America, we enjoyed watching the Grand Prixs from the berm. So check out the show highlights and enjoy the photos..... Champion:

From Krista

The Archway Team had many highlights this past week at the Evergreen Classic Horse Show. One of these highlights was having Emmie return to competition after a 2 1/2 year absence. We made a last minute decision to put Emmie on the truck to Carnation when we realized Jenna (at 9 years old) was growing too tall for her medium pony. We decided to have Lauren show her in the Schooling Hunter Division just to see how Emmie would perform. On Wednesday and Thursday Emmie's performance exceeded our expectations!! She won great ribbons in both the Low and the Schooling Hunters with Lauren.

On Thursday we decided to let Jenna take the reins and entered her in the 12 and under Equitation on the Flat and they won the class! They worked perfect together. We had a flashback of Vivienne riding her at her first show. Just like with Vivienne; Emmie and Jenna just clicked and they formed an instant partnership. They were entered in the Low classes over fences and worked up to the 2'6" placing well in each class. So on to Thunderbird they go to compete in the Pre Childrens!

As Horseman, we are privileged to work with some very special horses. We are forever grateful to the Western Family for entrusting us with this amazing horse. Our experience with these animals can be summed up in one word ( or with Emmie's show name) -"PRICELESS"!

Evergreen Classic Recap

Wow, what a week! After beginning with clouds and drizzle we ended the week with record breaking heat reaching up to 96 degrees on Sunday! The Carnation setting is one of the most lovely places in the country and Mt Rainier in the background is amazing, I never get tired of seeing our beautiful Cascade Mountain Range. It is such fun to compete on grass, the absence of dust is always a plus and the footing remained exceptional throughout the week. The river brought much needed relief to many, thanks to the adults who watched over the children as they swam and cooled off. Our favorite story in the Grand Hunter ring was about Hannah who sits on an 18 hands horse. During the XLarge Junior Hunter Handy Class Hannah attempted a roll back and found herself riding through tree branches, as we watched from the gate she completely disappeared from the neck up, she emerged from the tree without missing a beat and jumped an oxer two strides later. As she cantered towards the gate we witnessed her spitting leaves and twigs from her mouth, the jump crew ran out to remove the debirs from in front of the last oxer! We were rolling on the ground in laughter and being the good sport she is she also joined in. Needless to say she was fine and everyone got a good laugh!

As the week of competition came to a close and points were tallied Archway riders and horses excelled in many divisions. Here is a summary:

Champions:

Pregreen 3'3" -Optimystic - Corene Smith; Small Hunter -Silver Lining - Corene Smith; Baby Green- Sir William- Corene Smith: Equitation 15-17- Natale Hill; Pony Equitation- Payton Smith; Modified Jr/Am Hunter - Broderick- Natalie Hill; Childrens Pony Equitation -Riley Porter; A/O Hunter 3'3" -Princeton- Erin Osberg; Pre Childrens Equitation- Mli Kerslake;

Reserve Champions:

Pony Hunter- Serendipity- Payton Smith; Modified Jr/Am Hunter- Remington- Nicole Tidwell; Children Pony Hunter- My Girl-Riley Porter; Pony Hunter Classic- Serendipity- Payton Smith

Everyone of our riders cam home with awards and more important the rewards of a job well done!!!!

Now on to Thunderbird...

Evergreen Classic Day 4

Archway riders continue their winning ways on this 4th day of showing. We have filled our walls with top ribbons and the Champions and Reserves keep rolling in. Horses continue to perform exceptionally well. The temperature was in the 90's today which is very warm for the NW. Horses and Riders remained cool, calm and collected! Cady and Marylou had wet wash cloths stored in ice and handed these to team riders as they exited the ring. The grooms kept horses hosed off and under fans to beat the heat. Lisa made a special run to Starbucks to bring iced mochas to the grooms and trainers just in time to push us through the Mini Prix. As we so often say it takes a village!! Keep up the good work..... Evergreen Classic Day 2

Thursday showed us great  NW weather once again. The grass rings were exceptional and the jumps were inviting and unique. In the Grand Hunter ring you gallop through the trees and there were only two lines with related distances. The horses are enjoying the change. Today was the finish of  the Pro divisions in the Hunter rings , horses continued to give us their best and ended up  successful in the divisions. The Equitation began at all levels and  Archway riders placed in the top three in all age groups in all rings, this is a reflection of our commitment to form =function!! Great job riders!! Natalie and Brody completed their first USHJA classic and had a blast, well Natalie had a blast, Brody was a little" Star Struck" with all the spectators and "option jumps" but he learned alot! Come join us in Carnation tonight is the Progressive Aisle Party and it promises to be a fun-food filled evening, archway will be hosting the bar during the Team relay so stop by and say hello. Happy Showing!!!

Evergreen Classic

Our first day of showing was a Success!! As we began our day the the fog created a feeling of anticipation. The sun slowly worked it's way through, the mountains appeared and the weather was perfect!  The footing in the grass rings was exceptional today allowing the horses to show their jumping skills form the 2'6" ring to the Grand Prix ring (we covered them all).  Corey went nonstop from 7:45 until 430 helping each horse perform at their best. We had a few dips along the way but feel good about the day.  Our horses demonstrated why they are our Champions. A great big thank you  goes out to Krista who kept us organized and on time to each ring, to Ana and Lauren our loyal assistant trainers who stood by to warm horses up and show them when needed, our grooms who brought each horse out perfectly turned out and of course our clients who cheered every horse on as they performed! It takes a Village!! The Dog Show ended our evening activities and everyone enjoyed themselves. By the end of the day there were many Blue ribbons hanging on our wall. I would say we had a very good day!!! Enjoy the slide show!! [slideshow]

Evergreen Classic

Evergreen Classic is our oldest and most prestigious event of the season. It is held at Remlinger Equestrian Park in Carnation,[gallery] the setting is a beautiful example of the Northwest. Each year we invest a lot of time and effort creating a unique tackroom area for our clients and friends to enjoy. So please bring the family and join us for a week of Northwest Show Jumping at its best!! Here are pictures of the first day of set up, check back often for updates.....

Oregon High Desert Classic I

Our week at the Oregon High Desert Classic was a successful one. We had riders from the Short Stirrup division all the way to the Mini Prix and for some riders it was there first time attending the beautiful Bend Oregon show. The grass footing was again incredible and weather was fantastic. Some highlights of our riders included: Kelsey and Natalie competing in their first 3'6 USEF Pessoa Hunter Seat Medal Class. Natalie was also Reserve Champion in the Junior Equitation 15 and under. Melani with her grit and perseverance ended with a double clear round in her Children's Jumper Classic finishing 4th (gotta love those victory gallops). Hannah Thornton with her WIN in her USEF Talent Search class against many top California riders and top ribbons in most of her equitation/medal classes. Alexa ending her weekend with a win in her Equitation over fences classes after a much challenging first couple days with Logan. Sophie winning her Eq on the flat riding Sweets. Payton winning the model and 4 out of the 5 classes in the Small Pony Division. Jenna worked her way to top ribbons in the Medium/Large pony division. Colby ended with a Championship in the Large Hunters. Ana competed on Skye in her second Mini Prix. Looking forward to more Mini Prix's at the August Shows.

Mark your calendars in 2011 for two weeks of Bend. It is a wonderful show with lots of recreational activities to do for the whole family. Many restaurants to choose from and of course the sunshine.

We all missed Amanda N and Amanda M who are usual attendees each year with us. Hoping they will be back with us next year.

So now home for two weeks and then off to Evergreen and then Thunderbird.

I want to acknowledge our riders who did their own grooming and braiding Kelsey and Sophie. Payton and Jenna who groomed themselves for Country Classic and Bend. Also, Alexa for braiding her own horse. I can appreciate the time and effort it takes to do these duties on your own. Good Job Girls!!! "Can I please sit up front with my Mommy?""I know Corey is taking a photo but I really don't want to look up""I'm the one braiding but not the one showing, what's wrong with this picture?" Answer "Being a good Mom!""Time to mount up""I'm ready are you?"The view driving home

Country Classic

Archway experienced success last week in Wilsonville, Oregon at the Country Classic Horse Show. Our riders/horses represented us well, winning major ribbons in all their divisions in both the Hunter/Equitation and Jumper rings. Everyone worked very hard on their goals and sometimes found themselves struggling with personal challenges.Once again I can say that they embraced these challenges with heart and determination. Great Job Girls!! I am proud to be your coach!![slideshow]

We will miss you Eddie!!

We want to wish Eddie Good Luck at his new home. Hillcrest Training has adopted him and hopefully we will see him time to time. Eddie was a horse we imported from Germany for Amanda Moore. He gave her a start in the jumper and Equitation rings with much success. He has been doing lessons in the Lesson Program and I'm sure some of you who had the opportunity to ride him will miss him as well. He will be well loved and taken care of in his new home.

Best of Luck Eddie Cassini!!

July Oregon Circuit

We are packed/ loaded and we have  started our caravan south, we were supposed to be travelling with the sun but alas, the NW does not always agree with the weather man.  We are hopeful that the weather improves throughout the week and look forward to seeing everyone. Watch for updates and photos. Safe Travels !!
